Virgilio Costa is Associate Professor of Greek History at the University of Rome Tor Vergata since 2/11/2007.

His main fields of research are fragmentary Greek historiography, Greek cultural history in the Hellenistic period, and the history of the Aegean poleis in Archaic and Classical age. In this last field he wrote the first (and so far only) monograph on Naxos of the Cyclades in antiquity.

In 2005 he published, for the series “I frammenti degli storici greci”, the first of three volumes of a new critical edition, with Italian translation and historical commentary, of the fragments of Philocorus of Athens. The work was awarded the “Culture 2000 of the European Union” prize. The first expanded edition of tome 1, dedicated to the fragments of the Atthis, appeared in 2007. Tomes II and III are at an advanced stage of elaboration, as well as the edition of the fragments of Damastes of Sigeion. Always for the series “The fragments of Greek historians” he is working on the edition of the fragments of the historians of Naxos in the Cyclades.

He also studied the history of Greek constitutionalism and the tradition and transmission of Greek historiography from late antiquity to the modern age, devoting several studies, in particular, to the figure of the Venetian scholar Natale Conti (1520-1588), a controversial witness of many lost Greek historians.

He edited for Brill’s New Jacoby, directed by Ian Worthington (McQuarie University, Sydney), the edition, with English translation and commentary, of about thirty Greek historians from the 5th century B.C. to the Byzantine age.

With regard to the cultural history of the Greek world in the Hellenistic age, he wrote, together with Monica Berti (Universität Leipzig), a history of the ancient Library of Alexandria and edited the proceedings of an international conference on the same subject. He is also working on a new book on the image of the Library of Alexandria in Western culture, and again with Monica Berti in 2011 he published an important but so far forgotten work by Gaetano De Sanctis on Philip II of Macedon and Alexander the Great.

He organized about fifteen national and international conferences and seminars, including: the First International Workshop “Fragmentary Greek Historiography. Perspectives and research experiences” (University of Rome Tor Vergata, 23-24 October 2003); the II International Workshop “Tradition and transmission of fragmentary Greek historiography. In memory of Silvio Accame” (University of Rome Tor Vergata, 16-18 February 2006); the III International Workshop “Tradition and transmission of fragmentary Greek historiography II” (University of Rome Tor Vergata, 24-26 February 2011); the international colloquium; Return to Alexandria. Greek historiography and library culture: traces of a lost relationship (November 28-29, 2012). Of all these symposia he also edited the proceedings. He also served on the scientific committee of several international symposia, including the Colloque international “Les historiens fragmentaires de langue grecque à l’epoque impériale et tardive” (Nantes, 26-28 November 2015).

He is co-director of the international series “I frammenti degli storici greci”; member of the scientific committee of the series “Ricerche di Filologia, Letteratura e Storia” (Edizioni TORED); member of the scientific committee of the series “Biblioteca Classica TORED”; member of the editorial board and editorial coordinator of “Rationes Rerum. Rivista di Filologia e Storia” (editors Leopoldo Gamberale [Philology] and Eugenio Lanzillotta [History]); member of the scientific committee of the international series “Studia Hellenistica” (Peeters, Leuven, Belgium); member of the scientific committee of Edizioni Studium (Rome).

He is a founding member and member of the executive board since 2014 of the international scientific association GAHIA – Geography and Historiography in Antiquity.

In 2005, with the first volume of the annotated edition of the fragments of Philocorus, he won one of the five prizes of the call “Culture 2000”, promoted by the European Community for the first translation into modern language of literary works central to the European tradition and identity.

He is coordinator of the PhD in “Classical Antiquities and their fortune. Archaeology, Philology, History” at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Previously he was a member, at the same university, of the board of teachers of the PhD in “Ancient History” (1998-2012), in “Humanistic Studies” (2012-2013), and “Classical Antiquities and their fortune. Archaeology, Philology, History” (2014-).
